Ospedale del Ceppo

The Ospedale del Ceppo is a medieval hospital founded in 1277 in Pistoia, in Tuscany, by the lay confraternity known as the Compagnia del Ceppo dei Poveri. Its most celebrated feature is a Renaissance loggia, built in 1502 in a style inspired by Brunelleschi and restored by Michelozzo di Bartolomeo, decorated with a glazed terracotta frieze by Santi Buglioni made between 1525 and 1529 depicting the seven works of mercy, alongside roundels by Giovanni della Robbia showing scenes from the life of the Virgin. The hospital no longer functions as a medical facility and today houses the Pistoia Medical Academy.
