Historic England, formally the Historic Buildings and Monuments Commission for England, is an executive non-departmental public body of the British government, sponsored by the Department for Culture, Media and Sport. It was created under the National Heritage Act 1983 and operated as English Heritage from 1984 until a 2015 restructuring split off a separate charity to run historic properties, leaving Historic England, formed on 1 April 2015 and headquartered at The Engine House in Swindon, with the regulatory role. Its responsibilities include listing historic buildings, scheduling ancient monuments, registering historic parks and gardens, and advising national and local government on protecting Englands historic environment.
