Byzantine architecture is the building tradition of the Byzantine, or Eastern Roman, Empire, centered on Constantinople and running from the fourth century until the empire's fall in 1453. It is known above all for its great domes carried on pendentives, letting a circular dome rise over a square plan, and for the gold mosaics and marble revetment that cover its interiors. The Hagia Sophia in Constantinople, combining a longitudinal basilica plan with a centralized domed one, is its most celebrated example.
