Tudor Revival Architecture

Tudor Revival architecture emerged in Britain in the second half of the 19th century, became especially prominent in the early 20th century and has continued in occasional use since, spreading through British colonies to New Zealand, Singapore, North America, South America, Australia and continental Europe. Rather than reviving grand Tudor palace architecture it drew on humbler, rustic Tudor building, favoring steeply pitched roofs, half timbering with herringbone brick infill, tall mullioned windows, high chimneys, jettied upper floors and dormer windows, sometimes with thatched roofs, with later versions often applying decorative half timbering over ordinary brick or concrete block construction. Ascott House in Buckinghamshire, designed by George Devey around 1876, and Norman Shaw's Cragside from the late 1860s are early examples, and Edwin Lutyens's Deanery in Berkshire of 1899 and the half timbered Liberty department store in London of 1924 mark its later development. The style grew partly as a reaction against Victorian excess and alongside the Arts and Crafts movement's interest in vernacular building.
