The Pombaline style was a Portuguese architectural style of the 18th century, named after Sebastiao Jose de Carvalho e Melo, the first Marques de Pombal, who directed the reconstruction of Lisbon after the earthquake of 1755. Pombal supervised plans by military engineers including Manuel da Maia and Eugenio dos Santos that laid out the new Baixa district on a grid with roads and pavements a fixed width, replacing the former Royal Palace with the Praca do Comercio. The facades lining the new streets followed a restrained Neoclassical scheme with a standardized system of decoration inside and out and reduced use of azulejo tiling.
