CITIC Plaza

Tall Buildings and Skyscrapers

CITIC Plaza stands in the Tianhe district of Guangzhou, China, completed in 1997 to a design by the firm Dennis Lau and Ng Chun Man Architects and Engineers. At the time of its completion its twin office towers, rising to 391 meters, were the tallest reinforced concrete buildings in the world, a distinction achieved using high-strength concrete rather than the structural steel more commonly used for buildings of comparable height. Its stepped, symmetrical profile and dual-tower composition were designed to echo traditional Chinese pagoda forms scaled up to modern skyscraper proportions. The complex also includes twin 38-story residential towers flanking the main office towers, along with a shopping podium at its base, making it a large mixed-use development built during Guangzhou's rapid growth as a commercial center in the 1990s.

Has Building Type

Entity-backed identity for the building-type enum value this building already carries, resolved to an architecture concept by an explicit value-to-entity map (phase 3 bucket conversion, docs\design_entity_backed_browse_buckets_20260928.md). The building-type fact itself stays on the building unchanged.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is CITIC Plaza still the tallest concrete building in the world?

No, it held the title only until the Trump Tower Chicago was completed.

CITIC Plaza's twin office towers rose to 391 meters when the complex was completed in Guangzhou in 1997, using high-strength reinforced concrete rather than structural steel for a building of that height. The record did not hold indefinitely. According to Wikipedia, it was the tallest concrete building in the world until the completion of the Trump Tower Chicago, which later surpassed it using the same reinforced concrete construction method.
