Georgian Architecture

Renaissance, Baroque and Neoclassical Architecture

Georgian architecture is the name given to the family of classical building styles current in Britain and its colonies between 1714 and 1830, spanning the reigns in continuous succession of the four Hanoverian King Georges. It is defined chiefly by its classicism, expressed in facades using classical pilasters, pedimented doors and windows and graceful moldings, most visibly in the uniform, symmetrical terraces of townhouses that still line entire squares in cities such as London, Bath, Edinburgh and Dublin. The Georgian era was a relatively peaceful and prosperous period in Britain that saw a marked increase in building of every kind, from grand country houses and villas to industrial and civic structures and designed landscape parks, most of it worked in the classical idiom. Many Georgian buildings and streetscapes are protected today as listed buildings or within conservation areas because of the coherence and quality of the classical urban fabric they created.
