American architect, 1856 to 1924, the leading designer of the early steel-frame tall building in Chicago and St. Louis, the Wainwright and Guaranty buildings above all, and the writer who declared in 1896 that form ever follows function. He gave the skyscraper its first artistic theory, trained Frank Lloyd Wright in his office, and died poor as classical fashion swept his manner away.
