Bodiam Castle is a moated castle near Robertsbridge in East Sussex, England, built in 1385 by Sir Edward Dalyngrigge after he received royal permission from King Richard II to fortify the site. Dalyngrigge, a younger son who made his fortune as a mercenary in France during the Hundred Years War, married into the Bodiam manor and used his wealth to build a quadrangular castle with no central keep, instead placing living chambers around the outer walls. Circular towers guard each of the four corners, square towers rise from the south, east and west walls, and a twin towered gatehouse faces north across an artificial moat between five and seven feet deep. Historians regard Bodiam as embodying the popular image of a medieval castle, in part because its builder deliberately shaped the surrounding landscape to heighten the structure's visual effect on approach. The castle has been owned by the National Trust since 1925, carries Grade I listed status and Scheduled Monument protection, and remains open to visitors.
