Castel del Monte is a 13th century citadel and castle on a hill near Andria in the Apulia region of southeastern Italy, built during the 1240s by King Frederick II on lands he had inherited from his mother, Constance of Sicily. Its interior marbles and remaining furnishings were removed in the 18th century, and although it lacks a moat or drawbridge, leading some to doubt it was ever meant as a defensive fortress, archaeological work has suggested it originally had a curtain wall.
