The Castello Maniace is a citadel and castle at the far point of the Ortygia island promontory in Syracuse, Sicily. It was built between 1232 and 1240 under Holy Roman Emperor Frederick II and takes its name from George Maniakes, the Byzantine general who captured the city in 1038. The castle was originally reached only by a bridge across a moat, which has since been filled in, and its decorated stone portal remains a distinguishing feature. It is now open to the public as a tourist attraction in Syracuse.
