Chillon Castle is a medieval island castle on Lake Geneva, near Veytaux in the Swiss canton of Vaud, on the narrow shore between Montreux and Villeneuve that historically commanded the route into the Rhone valley. It was originally held by the House of Savoy, passed to Bernese control from 1536 to 1798, and is now owned by the canton of Vaud, which maintains it as a Swiss cultural property of national significance and one of the most visited castles in Europe.
