The Solomon R. Guggenheim Museum, often called simply the Guggenheim, is an art museum at 1071 Fifth Avenue on the Upper East Side of Manhattan, New York City, holding a permanent collection of Impressionist, Post-Impressionist, early modern and contemporary art alongside special exhibitions through the year. Established by the Solomon R. Guggenheim Foundation in 1939 as the Museum of Non-Objective Painting under its first director Hilla von Rebay, it adopted its current name in 1952, three years after the death of its founder, and continues to be owned and operated by the Solomon R. Guggenheim Foundation.

UNESCO added eight properties, including the Guggenheim, to the World Heritage List in July 2019 under the title "The 20th-Century Architecture of Frank Lloyd Wright".
Article text, heritage designation
The museum was added to the National Register of Historic Places (NRHP) on May 19, 2005, and was designated as a National Historic Landmark on October 6, 2008.
Early years and Hilla Rebay
As the collection grew, in 1937 Guggenheim established the Solomon R. Guggenheim Foundation to foster the appreciation of modern art.
