Prague Castle is one of the largest ancient castle complexes in the world, with origins dating to the ninth century, and has served historically as the seat of the kings of Bohemia, the Holy Roman Emperors and, since 1918, the President of the Czech Republic. The complex encompasses palaces, courtyards and gardens alongside St. Vitus Cathedral, the traditional site of the Czech coronation jewels. Its buildings blend Romanesque, Gothic, Renaissance and Baroque construction accumulated over successive rebuildings across many centuries. The castle stands at the heart of the historic centre of Prague.
