Prösels Castle is a Gothic style castle standing on the high plain below the Schlern mountain, in the municipality of Völs am Schlern in South Tyrol, Italy. It was first built around the year 1200 by the lords of Völs, feudal tenants of the Bishopric of Brixen, and is first documented by name, as castrum Presil, in 1279. Leonhard of Völs, born in 1458 and later governor of the County of Tyrol, rebuilt it in its present Gothic form. The castle stayed with the Völs family until 1810, then changed owners fourteen times before a dedicated curatorship restored it between 1981 and 1982, and it now operates as a museum with military, historical and religious exhibits.
