Rocchetta Mattei is an eclectic nineteenth-century castle near Riola in the municipality of Grizzana Morandi, in the Emilia-Romagna region of Italy, built on a rocky outcrop above the Reno valley on the ruins of a medieval fortress. Count Cesare Mattei began construction in 1850 and personally directed the design through the main building phase, which concluded around 1875, blending neo-medieval, Moorish revival and Liberty elements in a deliberately labyrinthine layout built largely from plaster, cement and papier-mache finished to imitate stone. The castle served as a private residence for Mattei and as the headquarters of his alternative medical system, electrohomeopathy. Since 2015 it has been owned and managed as a museum by the Fondazione Cassa di Risparmio in Bologna, drawing more than 73,000 visitors a year on guided tours.
