Roscrea Castle

Fortifications and Military Architecture

Roscrea Castle is a 13th-century motte-and-bailey castle in the town of Roscrea, Ireland. Its walled courtyard, about 40 metres wide, is enclosed by curtain walls and a ditch, and the main residence is a three-storey gate building flanked by two three-quarter round towers, with no keep. King John ordered a motte and tower on the site in 1213, but the present stone castle was raised later in the century, and the Butlers of Ormond held it from 1315 until the 18th century. The Georgian Damer House was added within the grounds in 1728. Registered as National Monument number 211, the castle now forms part of Roscrea Heritage Centre together with Damer House and its gardens.
