The Royal Castle in Warsaw was the former official residence of the Polish monarchs, standing at the entrance to the city's Old Town, and later served as the seat of the Sejm, the Polish parliament, after Poland adopted a constitutional monarchy. The castle was almost entirely destroyed by German bombardment and deliberate demolition during the Second World War. It was rebuilt from the 1970s using historic paintings and surviving architectural fragments as reference, reopening progressively through the 1980s as a deliberate act of postwar reconstruction and national memory, and now operates as a museum.
