Verrès Castle is a fortified castle in Verrès, in Italy's Aosta Valley, built in 1390 by Yblet de Challant, a vassal of the Counts of Savoy who had received the surrounding land in 1372 for his service. It is considered one of the first examples of a castle built as a single massive structure rather than a cluster of buildings inside a defensive wall, taking the form of an austere cube roughly thirty metres on each side with almost no decoration, walls more than 2.5 metres thick, and continuous battlements. A Latin inscription of 1390 on the castle's architrave records that Yblet had it built, naming his sons François and Jean de Challant, and the restored castle, now owned by the Autonomous Region of Aosta Valley, is open to the public on guided tours.
