Villa Farnesina is a Renaissance suburban villa in Rome's Trastevere district, built between 1506 and 1510 for Agostino Chigi, a wealthy Sienese banker who served as treasurer to Pope Julius II. Baldassare Peruzzi designed the U shaped villa, whose airy five bay loggia broke from the more closed urban palaces typical of the period. It is renowned for the frescoes that Raphael and other High Renaissance masters painted for it, which remain in their original rooms. The Italian state now owns the property, which houses the Accademia dei Lincei and is open to visitors.
