Villa Medici at Cafaggiolo

The Villa Medicea di Cafaggiolo is a villa near Barberino di Mugello in the valley of the River Sieve, about 25 kilometers north of Florence, Italy. It was one of the oldest and most favored of the Medici family's country estates, held by the family since the fourteenth century when it belonged to Averardo de' Medici, whose son Giovanni di Bicci de' Medici is considered the founder of the Medici dynasty. The villa was rebuilt to designs by the Renaissance architect Michelozzo in 1452 and became a meeting place for leading intellectuals of the Italian Renaissance. Though never the grandest of the family's houses, it was the scene of important events in Medici history, from the reception of Medici brides to the murder of a Medici wife. The castle is today privately owned by the company Societa Cafaggiolo srl.
