Visconti Castle (Somma Lombardo)

Visconti Castle is a medieval castle-palace in Somma Lombardo, in the Province of Varese in Lombardy, northern Italy, standing on a site with buildings dating to the 9th century and a fortress from the 13th century. In 1448 the brothers Francesco and Guido Visconti, who had taken refuge there from the forces of the Ambrosian Republic, divided the castle between them; Francesco's descendants became the Visconti di San Vito line and Guido's became the Visconti di Modrone family. The San Vito section holds frescoes linked to the school of Camillo Procaccini and an altarpiece attributed to Cerano, along with an extensive collection of barber's basins, and parts of the castle remain in use for private events while other parts are open to the public on guided tours.
