American architect and engineer, 1832 to 1907, trained at the Ecole Centrale in Paris alongside Gustave Eiffel and served as a Union Army engineer before opening a Chicago practice in 1867. His Home Insurance Building of 1884 to 1885 carried its floors and much of its walls on an internal metal frame, the conventional starting point of the skyscraper, and his office trained Chicago School architects including Louis Sullivan and Daniel Burnham.
