A group of weathering steel alloys, patented by United States Steel in the 1930s under the trademark COR-TEN, that form a stable, adherent rust-colored oxide layer when exposed to weather, protecting the metal beneath without paint or ongoing maintenance. Architects adopted it from the 1960s for its warm, changing surface color, notably for Brutalist civic buildings and for contemporary museum, memorial and sculpture pavilions.
