A nonprofit organization, based in the Gowanus neighborhood of Brooklyn, New York, that advances the role of design in shaping public life through competitions, fellowships and public programs. It traces its founding to 1894 as the Society of Beaux-Arts Architects, later the Beaux-Arts Institute of Design, and took its present name in 1995 in honor of William Van Alen, the architect of the Chrysler Building, who had received the institution's own Paris Prize in 1908 to 1909.
