William Van Alen's Art Deco skyscraper on Lexington Avenue, New York, completed in 1930, its stainless steel crown of sunburst arcs and triangular windows the most loved silhouette of the style. Its secretly assembled spire took it past the Bank of Manhattan tower to make it briefly the tallest building in the world, until the Empire State Building overtook it the following year.
