Swiss French architect, painter and polemicist, 1887 to 1965, born Charles-Edouard Jeanneret, the most influential and most contested architect of the twentieth century. He gave modernism its five points and its slogans, a house is a machine for living in, built Villa Savoye, the Unite d'Habitation, Ronchamp and the capitol of Chandigarh, and his urban visions of towers in parkland shaped, for better and worse, the postwar city.
