Home›Buildings and Structures›Style›Victorian ArchitectureStyles and MovementsVictorian ArchitectureNineteenth-Century Revival and Eclectic ArchitectureReference and ClassificationDevelopingVictorian architecture is not a single style but a series of architectural revival styles current in Britain, the United States and elsewhere during the reign of Queen Victoria from 1837 to 1901. Rather than one coherent aesthetic, it names an era in which architects drew eclectically on historic precedent, producing distinct sub styles including Gothic Revival, Italianate, Second Empire, Romanesque Revival and Queen Anne, each of which had its own period of dominance within the era, for example Italianate gaining influence from the 1840s and 1850s while Gothic Revival grew more prevalent by the 1880s. What unifies these otherwise different revival styles under the single Victorian label is a shared emphasis on ornamentation and decorative detail, which rejected the plainer, more restrained classicism of the preceding Georgian period. Because the term covers such a wide range of sub styles across two continents and more than six decades, describing a building as simply Victorian identifies its era rather than any one specific set of forms.FactsVictorian ArchitectureConnectionsIn the Other AtlasesSourcesComments (0)Reader Challenges (0)FactsPeriodWell-attested1837 to 1901 1Origin RegionWell-attestedBritain 1Victorian ArchitectureFilter Results35 entriesArchitectAllJoseph Paxton (1)Building FamilyAllBridges and Viaducts (1)City and Town Halls (1)Cottages and Small Houses (1)Department Stores and Shopping Buildings (1)Executive, Head-of-State and Diplomatic Buildings (1)Farmsteads and Homesteads (5)Farmsteads and Homesteads of the Midwestern United States (1)Farmsteads and Homesteads of the Northeastern United States (1)Farmsteads and Homesteads of the Southern United States (1)Farmsteads and Homesteads of the Western United States (2)Historic Districts (Multiple Buildings) (1)Historic Homes and Estates (Misfiled) (2)Historic Houses (Individual Landmarks) (6)Historic Houses of the New York City Region (2)Historic Houses of the Rest of the Northeastern United States (1)Historic Houses of the Southern United States (1)Historic Houses of Upstate New York (2)Hotels and Grand Hotels (2)Inns, Taverns and Public Houses (1)Manor and Country Houses (4)Plantation Houses (2)Plantation Houses: Georgia (1)Plantation Houses: North Carolina (1)Railway Stations (1)Villas (4)Villas of the United Kingdom and Ireland (2)Villas of Western and Northern Europe (2)World's Fair and Exhibition Pavilions (1)MaterialAllBrick (8)Cast Iron (1)Concrete (1)Granite (1)Limestone (1)Steel (2)Stone (3)Timber (12)Building TypeAllBascule bridge (1)Castle (1)Castle and hotel (1)Church (1)Department store (1)Exhibition Building (1)Farm (4)Historic house (7)Hotel (1)House (2)Mansion (6)Model village (1)Plantation (1)Railway Terminus (international rail hub) (1)Residential (1)Town Hall (1)Victorian house (1)Villa (4)Completed YearAll1228 (1)1786 (1)1811 (1)1822 (1)1840 (1)1844 (1)1845 (1)1847 (1)1850 (1)1851 (1)1854 (1)1855 (1)1859 (1)1864 (1)1868 (1)1869 (1)1870 (1)1871 (1)1876 (1)1880 (3)1884 (1)1886 (2)1888 (1)1889 (1)1892 (1)1893 (1)1897 (1)1901 (1)1904 (1)1905 (1)1906 (1)Standing StatusAllDemolished (1)Standing (34)GroupAllBridges and Viaducts (1)City and Town Halls (1)Cottages and Small Houses (1)Department Stores and Shopping Buildings (1)Executive, Head-of-State and Diplomatic Buildings (1)Farmsteads and Homesteads of the Midwestern United States (1)Farmsteads and Homesteads of the Northeastern United States (1)Farmsteads and Homesteads of the Southern United States (1)Farmsteads and Homesteads of the Western United States (2)Historic Districts (Multiple Buildings) (1)Historic Homes and Estates (Misfiled) (2)Historic Houses of the New York City Region (2)Historic Houses of the Rest of the Northeastern United States (1)Historic Houses of the Southern United States (1)Historic Houses of Upstate New York (2)Hotels and Grand Hotels (2)Inns, Taverns and Public Houses (1)Manor and Country Houses (4)Plantation Houses: Georgia (1)Plantation Houses: North Carolina (1)Railway Stations (1)Villas of the United Kingdom and Ireland (2)Villas of Western and Northern Europe (2)World's Fair and Exhibition Pavilions (1)PlaceAllAustralia (3)Ireland (1)Sweden (2)United Kingdom (7)United States (23)Show ResultsBrowseCompareSelect all 35Alfred E.
