Dutch Colonial Architecture

Regional and Traditional Architecture

Dutch colonial architecture refers to the range of building styles produced across the Dutch colonial empire, generally adapted to local climate and built from local materials within diverse cultural contexts. It is most visible today in Indonesia, especially Java and Sumatra, as well as in the United States, South Asia and South Africa. In the former Dutch East Indies, colonial building was studied academically and developed into a distinct tropical architecture adapted to the region's climate. Related but distinct traditions include the earlier Dutch Colonial architecture of New Netherland in North America and the later Dutch Colonial Revival style.
