It is a site of historical and archaeological significance that is dominated by a massive column of granite approximately 180 m (590 ft) high.

Standing east of the Reflecting Pool and the Lincoln Memorial, the monument is made of bluestone gneiss for the foundation and of granite for the construction.

The Mount Rushmore National Memorial is a national memorial featuring a colossal sculpture carved into the granite face of Mount Rushmore (Lakota: Tȟuŋkášila Šákpe Pahá, or Six Grandfathers Mountain) in the Black Hills, about 2 mi (3 km) southwest of Keystone, South Dakota, United States.

The main façade, facing the Plaza de la Armería, rises above a rusticated base and is articulated by giant-order columns and pilasters, with a contrast between grey granite and white limestone.

The two-acre (8,100 m2) site is dominated by two black granite walls engraved with the names of those service members who died or remain missing as a result of their service in Vietnam and South East Asia during the war.

The building stands on double-height columns at the base, and the facade is made of red Imperial granite and stainless steel.

The "Black Rock" nickname is derived from the design of its facade, which consists of angled dark-gray granite piers alternating with dark-tinted glass.

Between its fenced perimeter and granite-lined concrete structure lie rings of razor wire.

It is an ornate Victorian Gothic/Stick style two-story granite structure, designed by noted New York City architect Calvert Vaux.

== Ruins == The Tell Baalbek temple complex, fortified as the town's citadel during the Middle Ages, was constructed from local stone, mostly white granite and a rough white marble.

Over a period of 62 years, the mud fort was expanded by the first three Qutb Shahi sultans into the present structure: a massive fortification of granite extending around 5 km (3.1 mi) in circumference.

=== Facade === The building's facade is made of brick, granite, and terracotta, and white Yule Marble and iron are also used in the building.

The façade is lined by fourteen columns with highly stylized Corinthian capitals, all made from red granite from Kalvola.

The memorial is constructed with white Imperial Danby marble taken from Vermont, which rests on a series of granite and marble-stepped terraces.

Construction began in 1890 with granite supplied by New England Granite Works, owned by James G.

The exterior is thought to have been clad with limestone and polished granite.

The bottom course of casing stones was made out of pink granite but the remainder of the pyramid was cased in Tura limestone.
