Home›Buildings and Structures›Material›SandstoneArchitectural MaterialSandstoneStone and Masonry MaterialsReference and ClassificationDevelopingSandstone is a sedimentary rock formed from compacted and cemented sand grains, typically quartz, used as a building stone since antiquity for its workability and warm coloring. Its strength and porosity vary considerably with the mineral cement that binds its grains, silica-cemented sandstone being far more durable than the iron-oxide-cemented brownstone that gave many nineteenth-century American rowhouses their reddish-brown facades and their reputation for surface spalling. Widely quarried across Britain, India and the United States, it has furnished everything from Mughal forts to Victorian civic buildings, prized for cutting cleanly along its bedding planes into regular ashlar blocks.SandstoneConnectionsSourcesComments (0)Reader Challenges (0)SandstoneFilter Results65 entriesArchitectAllFrank Lloyd Wright (2)Norman Foster (1)Building FamilyAllAncient Egyptian
