Concrete, Cement and Cementitious Materials

Concrete is a composite building material made of aggregate bound together by a fluid cement that cures to a solid. It is the most widely used building material and the most-manufactured material in the world, and the second-most-used substance after water. When aggregate is mixed with dry Portland cement and water, the mixture forms a slurry that can be poured and molded; the cement reacts with the water through hydration, which hardens it over several hours into a durable stone-like matrix. Additives such as pozzolans or superplasticizers adjust the wet mix and the curing time, and most structural concrete is poured with embedded steel rebar for tensile strength, yielding reinforced concrete. It differs from mortar, which holds only fine aggregate and bonds masonry units, and from asphaltic concrete, which has a bituminous binder.
