Steel

Generic building material

Steel is an alloy of iron and carbon that demonstrates improved mechanical properties compared to pure iron, giving it a high elastic modulus, yield strength and fracture strength at low raw material cost. It is used structurally in buildings as beams, reinforcing rods and framing, as well as in bridges and infrastructure generally. This entity is the generic building-material sense of steel, used when a building's own source names its structural material only as "steel" without naming a specific alloy or treatment, distinct from a named specific type such as stainless steel or galvanized steel already carried as their own entities in this atlas.

Steel is an alloy of iron and carbon that demonstrates improved mechanical properties compared to the pure form of iron. Due to its high elastic modulus, yield strength, fracture strength and low raw material cost, steel is one of the most commonly manufactured materials in the world. Steel is used in structures (as concrete reinforcing rods or steel beams), in bridges, infrastructure, tools, ships, trains, cars, bicycles, machines, electrical appliances, furniture, and weapons.
